Lake Manyara National Park

Groundwater forest, a vast soda lake and lions that rest in the branches.

Lake Manyara is one of Tanzania's most dramatically placed parks, lying at the foot of the Great Rift Valley's western escarpment. You enter through a green forest fed by groundwater from the Ngorongoro highlands, where large troops of baboons gather along the road.

Most of the park is taken up by a shallow soda lake that often holds huge flocks of flamingos. Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions, which spend the heat of the day stretched along the branches.
